Are Resume Writers Useful?

When a resume writer may help, what a good one should know, and what warning signs to watch for.

A resume writer can be helpful if they understand how resumes are actually reviewed and can explain what recruiters, hiring managers, or screening tools are likely to notice first.

A professional should be able to point out whether you're missing key skills, whether your template may cause parsing issues, and how your wording could be made clearer and more effective.

They should also be able to give you a rough explanation of what an ATS is, and what it can do, at least if they're up to date with the industry.

As with all professions, quality varies. But if a writer makes overconfident claims about all ATSes, or insists they cannot filter or rank resumes at all, that is a reasonable red flag before spending money.
