What Is an ATS?

A short explanation of what an applicant tracking system is and what it actually does during hiring.

An ATS, or Applicant Tracking System, is software employers use to collect, organize, and review job applications.

Companies use ATSes to post jobs, store resumes, search candidates, move applicants between hiring stages, and keep recruiting activity in one place. Recruiters may search by job title, skills, location, or keywords pulled from a resume.

Some ATS platforms include automation or ranking features, but many others are mainly used to keep hiring organized. That is why a clean, readable resume still matters: it helps both software and human reviewers understand your background faster.

Even the systems that don't automatically filter out resumes may still offer recruiters the option to manually add filters. Filtering is a real capability, even if usually not fully automated.
